Optimise rumen pH via salivaSub-Acute Ruminal Acidosis (SARA) starts when the rumen pH gets under 6 and if it continues to lower under 5.4, the ruminant is in ruminal acidosis state.
Although the effects of SARA induce a lower feed intake, reduced milk production and quality, lower feed efficiency, symptoms on the field are invisible. It is a very hard, if not impossible for the farmer to detect by eye a cow in sub-acute ruminal acidosis.
Oleobiotec Saliva Promoter naturally increases average ruminal pH by enhancing saliva production and improving its composition in buffering components. These endogenous buffers in saliva can neutralise acid components and thus help manage the risk of sub-acute ruminal acidosis.

Sub-acute ruminal acidosis is nowadays frequent and is caused by different parameters:
- High carbohydrate rations: to attain a certain level of production, cows have to be fed rations rich in carbohydrates. These are downgraded into the rumen by amylolytic bacteria, whose activity lower the ruminal pH.
- Decreased feed intake: during heat stress conditions for example, the animals tend to lower their feed intake, inducing less rumination. The rumen pH therefore decreases.
- Cows grazing or fed with rapidly fermentable low fibre grass are also more susceptible to develop ruminal acidosis.
Fluctuations and decrease in rumen pH can be avoided by promoting the animal’s natural physiological system: production of saliva, of endogenous buffers and rumination.
